Tips to get started

<h2>Getting started with your career in home bartending...</h2>
So, you got your Q-kit and are somewhat ready to step into the world of home bartending? Before you invite some of your friends over, take a few minutes to read this and prepare yourself as any pro would.
You have probably cleaned the gear which comes with the Q-Kit, now you can prepare some of the ingredients that are often considered as seen upon as the basics in all cocktail mixings.
<h4><strong>Here are some tips from the Cocktail Club team:</strong></h4>
<strong>Ice</strong>, plenty of it, and if you ever come over someone who sells ice of a higher quality, buy some as well. With higher quality, it means when the ice is more solid and not as brittle as the ice one can buy in the supermarkets.

Large ice cubes which are solid and transparent, are often used in stirred spirit-based cocktails. The larger the ice, the less dilution of the drink. Good quality ice in the shaker means less breakage and therefore “cleaner” drinks without ice particles. Thus the fine strainer for catching these in certain cocktails...

<strong><a href="https://www.cocktailclub.com/articles/getting-started/how-to-make-sugar-syrup/">Syrup</a>.</strong> Just sugar and water, equal parts. Simple sugar syrup is used in most shaken cocktails and is a must to have in your fridge.

Make some syrup by adding 1 part sugar and 1 equal part water and heat until transparent. This mixture doesn't need to boil for a long time. Fill up a squeeze bottle or a small glass bottle with a cap and you are good to go. Keep it in the fridge for weeks. If a party is being planned, so should a larger amount of syrup be made.

<strong>Citrus fruits.</strong> Limes and lemons and the odd orange. You´re basically covered for a large variety of cocktails if you have a stock of limes and lemons. Add the orange and you've got a garnish companion through the peel and zest.

<strong>Spirits.</strong> The starter pack, -the big 5. If you are new to the world of home bartending, go for some mid-range spirits to get started. The five basic spirits are: <strong>Vodka, Rum, Gin</strong>, <strong>Tequila</strong> and <strong>Whisky</strong> are all considered the basic spirits in modern bartending. Start here and when you've mastered the basic Daiquiri (rum) Margarita (Tequila) etc., you can wander off into tasting other variations of the same spirits or try different spirits. The variations and ingredients are numerous and tasty!

<strong>Bitters, sugars, and herbs.</strong> A basic bitter ingredient that lifts any cocktail like the Whisky sour is <strong>Angostura</strong> bitters. A herbal alcoholic concentrated preparation used to lift the aromatics and taste of cocktails and give your tastebuds another level of feel goods. White and brown sugars are always good to have in hand when trying out the e.g. Mojito or Irish coffee.
Mint being the most used herb is something to remember. If you have the chance to grow some, do so.

Getting Felice in front of the camera made our day great. His energy and devotion to his trade come through when we start talking. He is a young man with all the great attributes of a Southern Italian young man should have. Friendly, outcoming, and interested. No wonder he has been selected for the job as bar manager at The Thief in Oslo, Norway. He made us a variation of a Gin Fizz that he has elevated to an even fresher version of the old classic.

Question: Who are you and what is your background

Answer: My Name is Felice and I'm from Naples south in Italy. I'm a young bartender and have been bartending for about 7 - 8 years.

Q: Describe your bar for someone that has never been there before

A: The Thief Bar here in Oslo is a cocktail bar that aims to give our guests a different experience when enjoying our cocktails. Our aim is to steal our guests from their everyday life and give them an experience that they will remember.

Q: How have you witnessed the cocktail scene in Oslo change the last few years

A: The cocktail trend these last few years in Oslo has mainly been looking at the Sustainability issue regarding this world we live in. This from a professional side. I have seen an increase in interest from our guests and the general public.

Q: Have you seen consumers becoming more interested in recreating cocktails themselves?

A: People here in Oslo are becoming more interested mainly in classic cocktails, but are also interested in trying out our creations here at the bar.

Q: What is your favorite bar tool and why?

A: Well, my favorite bar tool is a jigger and especially the Mr. Slim Jigger. I like it because I enjoy perfection and this one is for me a tool to make perfect cocktails.

Q: How important is it to have quality bartending tools?

A: Well if you want to make good quality drinks, you need good quality tools. As simple as that.

Q: What cocktail would you recommend people to make at home?

A: The drink I would highly recommend making at home, would be the <a href="/cocktails/gin-fizz/">gin fizz</a> with a little twist. Q: Do you have any tips or twists for people making drinks at home?

A: Simple and important answer, make sure you have enough ice. Get control of your dilution in your drinks.

A: The Q-Kit is so amazing. I love the tool because it allows people to make good quality cocktails at home and I think the whole concept is a fantastic idea!

Q: Which is more important, the tools (the hardware) or the knowledge (the software)?

A: In my personal point of view, I think you need 50/50 of tools and knowledge. Good tools are essential, but without the knowledge, you won't know how to use them.

Alexander Moliner

Alexander Moliner has chosen some paths through life that has made him into what he is today. His path mainly consists of music and philosophy. We met Alexander in his home town Palafrugell to get to know him a little bit better. Our meeting left us hoping to meet him again soon.

&nbsp;

Question: Who is Alexander Moliner, Describe yourself in few words.

Answer: I really don't know yet. This question is something I am trying to find out as life goes on and I learn from this.

Q: Tell me about your town/area and What is good about it

A: I live in a coastal town north of Barcelona called Palafrugell. It´s a beautiful touristic area especially in the summer. Great place to feed my curiousness regarding places and people as we meet them coming from over the world.

Q: What is the first thing you think of in the morning.

A: I´d like to say "learn" to myself when I wake up. I'm a curious guy and one of the reasons I wake up in the morning is to learn mora about the work around us. Also, I would like to start the day by asking; "what can this day bring".

Q: Tell me your favorite place in the world

A: My favorite place in the world is Calella, a small village on by the sea. I practically learned to play the guitar on the beach there and it has a special place in my heart.

Q: Give me a name of one of the people that you look up to in this world, your inspiration.

A: For my music, the main inspiration comes from the Cuban singer/songwriter Silvio Rodriguez. Rodriguez has moved me both musically and intellectually with his intellectual and political lyrics. I find the thougths of Mahatma Gandhi meaningful and worth mentioning when this question arises.

Q: What can you not live without. Do you have a list of things that you cannot live without?

A: When I was younger, I chose to live on the streets as a personal life project. To get the experience and knowledge that we who have a comfortable life lack. During that period I found that after all we don't need too many things in life to be happy. If I had to choose, I would have to choose two things. My guitar and my books. They go hand in hand when it comes to importance in my life.

Q: What is your goal in life?

Q: Do you have a favorite Cocktail?

A: The old Fashioned is my favourite.

Q: If you could pass on some of your knowledge to the generations coming, what would that be?

A: Step out of your comfort zone and don't be afraid to try anything whatever it is. The reward of doing something that you don't know from before gives you experiences that will build your life to what it becomes.

When we asked Montse as she is called about an interview, she was thrilled to receive us to her house in the beautiful countryside of Catalonia. The same house she and her husband has renovated this last year into a charming and beautiful home. We were surprised to learn that besides the full renovation of their house, she has also taken on different commissions for her painting, started a small business where she and her boyfriend design and produce small stuffed animal figures for sail through a website they have launched. We spent a day with Montse and got to know about her values and work. We love meeting people who can show us that there are other ways to earn a living, following their heart and passion. Heres your chance to meet her as well:

Question: Who is Moontserrat Abril? Describe yourself in few words.

Answer: I'm Montse who is currently dedicated to painting, but also interested in other creative trades. I produce paintings, murals, commissioned portraits, but also the stuffed animal figures, i renovate and do some interior designs for clients as well. Along with refurbishing our house of course.

Q: Tell us about your town/area and what is good about it?

A: I live in Ermedàs surrounded by nature. I have found that living here after ten years in Barcelona brings out the best of my creative side.

Q: What is the first thing you think of in the morning.

Waking up in this time of my life now, I never actually have a single thought. This because my life brings numerous tasks every day. From teaching kids about art and paintings, to planning the decorations of a restaurant.

Q: Tell me your favorite place in the world?

A: Undoubtably Cadaqués up until now... But ask me today, and it would be our house here with the animals, nature and harmony that surrounds it. Its just so simple and real.

Q: Give me a name of one of the people that you look up to in this world, your inspiration?

A: My inspiration comes from the harmony within myself. But in order to achieve harmony, I find this in my surroundings, in people who follow their own beliefs and inspiration. Through nature and different places.

Q: What can you not live without? Do you have a list of things that you cannot live without?

A: Right now, the simple answer to this is my horse April. One reason for me to stay here in the first place. I got her as a gift and it just made me realize that this was the place to live and be.

Q: What is your goal in life?

A: First of all, I don't aspire to obtain things and wealth. I like my life being simple and uncomplicated. I think life should be lived and enjoyed as much as possible through the coherence of what I am and what I do.

Q: Do you have a favorite cocktail?

A: I dont have a preferanse when it comes to cocktails. I like soft and dry cocktails without them being too strong or too sweet.

Q: If you could pass on some of your knowledge to the generations coming, what would that be?

A: Dont overestimate your problems. It just isn't worth worrying about the obstacles we meet in life. They seem to resolve themselves in one way or the other.

The Story of Cocktail Club

In 2017 we landed our mission: To build the best cocktail kit containing the best tool and recipe software ever made.

Through our passion for good cocktails from professional bartenders, we were never truly satisfied with what we served and got served when in private social settings. We needed our own tools, our own cocktail kit.

We found ourselves in unfamiliar territory when trying to make our own cocktails. The equipment we had was insufficient and the vast number of recipes online just made us frustrated when trying to follow.<img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-9754" src="/img/journal/DSC9557bwh-1920x1282.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1282" /><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-9756" src="/img/journal/DSC9639bwh-1920x1282.jpg" alt="" width="1920" height="1282" />

We decided to do something about this. From the beginning, we focused on the most important of all ingredients in good cocktails, -Ice. Ice should be cold and in abundance. Then we went on to look at the best quality tools and not cut any corners. We needed the best possible tools in order to satisfy not only professional bartenders but also ourselves.

We founded the company Quenched in January of 2018 and have been working relentlessly to combine all the tools, ice container, and not least, the digital recipe platform to cater to everyone’s needs. The result is hopefully going to give numerous Cocktail Moments throughout the world. Basically, our goal is to make the best cocktail kit (the Q-Kit) possible, with a recipe platform that actually gives the user full control over every step of the process. As an example: If we were to create skis for novice skiers, we would create great skis, and deliver a ski instructor at the same time..;) (Being from Norway, we thought this might be a good comparison)

The digital recipe platform included in your kit uses visual elements to explain every step in the recipe. All tools included in the cocktail kit (The Q-Kit) are used in the films and images in the software. This is in order for the user to easily understand and manage the recipes by themselves and become familiar with the tools quickly. We changed the name on the platform in January 2021 to Cocktail Club to be more accessible online and easier to remember.

Shannon Mustipher

Shannon Mustipher is the author of the best-selling book “TIKI: Modern Tropical Cocktails”.

We met with Shannon in the Brooklyn Bar Glady's Caribbean and had a talk about her life as an author, her favorite cocktails and finally as a tester of the Q-Kit.

Glady's Caribbean Bar is a great backdrop for a chat with Shannon. The Tiki theme is related to the tropical-themed Rum cocktails. Glady's is no exception from that and offers a large variety of Rums for sale and for mixing cocktails.

Shannon, who started studying art, has moved on and given her creative touch to the world of Tiki cocktails. And speaking of Tikis, she´s become quite an expert in Rums, especially Caribbean Rums. When it comes to Shannon's favorite cocktail, she chose to make a simple but fresh Daiquiri for us. You can watch the video underneath to learn why. Our favorite hotel is the Aiguaclara, a family-run hotel with a truckload of charm and generous hospitality. The owners, Clara and Joan have made this 10 room boutique hotel into a destination worth staying in. The restaurant offers local produce and the fresh fish of the day. This restaurant can cater for all our needs as the cocktails served from the bar are worth exploring before and after dinner. Even the DJ with his classic soul vinyl´s will make you want to stay late and enjoy the atmosphere. No wonder this hotel is top-ranked in the region.

Second, on our list of noteworthy places to visit, is the cocktail bar called C-Roack. The garden-based bar creates a unique setting to enjoy a cocktail or four in..

Make some syrup by adding 1 part sugar and 1 equal part water and heat until transparent. (100ml of each should be enough for several cocktails).  This mixture doesn't need to boil. Fill up a squeeze bottle or a small glass bottle with a cork in it and you are good to go. Keep it in the fridge for weeks. The Deconstructed Cocktail

“<em>I have always tried to explain and express myself through images and visuals. Since I was young, I have been visualizing different things in my own head and always tried to explain to myself how I could put everything I encounter down on a canvas. Sometimes, the images stay inside my head for a long time, until I get the chance to do something about them, like with these images of visually mixed cocktails I have worked on now</em>”
These words are spoken by Kai Myhre, the founder of the initial idea that led to the Quenched company and its products seen now.

The images of the deconstructed cocktails have since long, been an ongoing project in his mind where figuring out how to take the pictures has been a hobby to recon. “<em>Some very dirty and wet trials have been conducted in my kitchen</em>”, Kai says when talking about the project. His final tools came from getting some water balloons from his kids and setting up a set in the studio and teaming up with tech-wiz photographer Dag Dalvang and shooting for two straight days. “<em>It's always great to work with Dag, he's the tech wizard I never will be and loves details more than I do.</em>” Says Kai.

&nbsp;

The imagery of the different classic cocktails were firstly meant to be offered for sale as posters and through the quenched.com platform. Whether or not a campaign, sales of prints, or something else, the images will be posted as Quenched strives to launch its products in different cities and countries. In other words, there are more deconstructed cocktails to come.

The visual thinking of Kai Myhre is represented by the build-up of the <a href="https://www.cocktailclub.com/cocktails/">software</a> where every step of the recipes is visually explained through the use of video, graphics, sound, and text. The idea behind is to make every great tasting cocktail available to be made at home by home bartenders. The theory that people learn more efficiently through visual learning stands strong with Kai.

When it comes to cocktails, there are numerous settings, moods, and occasions one can enjoy different songs and artists along with a perfect serve.

Occasions and moods will obviously need a perfect serve, but can also become elevated by the perfect song or your favorite artist. Having the perfect drink in your hand can only be elevated by great friends, setting, and perhaps one of the most important elements of the night, music.
If it´s loud and present or in the background as a backdrop, music can change the settings of any party or social gathering. Play it right, and you´ll make the party hit max in no time.

One of the main challenges when hosting an event is finding the right music for the party.

We've started working on some Spotify playlists that we would like to share based on what we have had the chance to test out in social settings.
The hardest task is to get the music right when you want to set the mood without having the music too loud. But if someone wants to jack the volume up, the music needs to work as well.
We've made our own Spotify list that we feel works great in those settings. We've called it “Chillin`& Griillin` because it just works throughout those topics. Turn the volume up and the music sets the mood. Keep it low, and you'll chill to great background tunes.

The Negroni is one of the most iconic cocktails in the world and believed to have originated in Florence, Italy after a Count ordered the barman to put gin in his Americano instead of soda water.

Today, the Negroni Cocktail is often served as an aperitif and comes with a tasteful punch of bitter flavors and orange aromas from the orange zest.

There are no complications with a Negroni, 3 equal measures of the liquids, 1 orange zest to be squeezed, and garnished. Stirred in the glass or in the mixing glass, the process is not complicated at all and could perhaps be considered as one of the simplest cocktails to be mixed at home.

Simple rules should be followed. A tumbler glass, plenty of ice, and time enough to stir it thoroughly bringing it to the right temperature and dilution. Using a huge ice block or ball will slow the dilution, keep the cocktail chilled, and looks great for Social Media!

The Story of Gin

The name derived from the Dutch word Genever, meaning Juniper berries is one of the world of cocktail´s main ingredients.

When it comes to ingredients in cocktails, gin is widely used and has a long history within the trade. Its characteristics come from the use of Juniper berries in the distillation process to give its aroma and taste.

So like vodka, gin can be made out of just about any organic produce. Some use potatoes, wheat, rye, or even grapes as its base. Getting the alcohol strength of 40% alcohol by volume makes it primarily not a gin. Adding Juniper berries and lately, -herbal and botanical elements make it a gin. The Juniper berries give the gin a smell of pine and wood. Botanicals and herbs, give different scents and altering taste somewhat to fit into floral tones.

When it comes to ingredients in cocktails, gin is widely used and has a long history within the trade. Its characteristics come from the use of Juniper berries in the distillation process to give its aroma and taste.

So like vodka, gin can be made out of just about any organic produce. Some use potatoes, wheat, rye, or even grapes as its base. Getting the alcohol strength of 40% alcohol by volume makes it primarily not a gin. Adding Juniper berries and lately, -herbal and botanical elements make it a gin. The Juniper berries give the gin a smell of pine and wood. Botanicals and herbs, give different scents and altering taste somewhat to fit into floral tones.


Gin and drinking habits related to gin dates back to the middle ages and even further. But during the years of 1720–40s, there was a period called “The Gin Crazer” in London where about 30 % of every household produced their own gin.

Gin has ever since been a hit amongst the British and even found itself as a main ingredient in fighting malaria. Gin was namely a great disguiser of the bitter flavors of the anti-malaria alkaloid called quinine. The anti-malaria elixir evolved into what today is known as a Gin & Tonic. And we all know the popularity of this drink.

There are different styles of gin and some of them might be good to know about.

<strong>Navy Strength</strong>. Traditional gin, but comes with a sting. High alcohol content makes this noticeable in cocktails if used.

Some gins are made for neat drinking, but it is used mainly inbuilt drinks and cocktails with several ingredients.</p>

How to make Honey Water

<h3>Honey Water</h3>
<p style="text-align: left;">Honey Water, also called Runny Honey, is used in cocktails to make them balanced and of course sweeter.  Make some honey water by adding 2 part honey and 1 part hot water and stir in your mixing glass until even texture.  In some recipes the mix is 3 parts honey to 1 part hot water.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Fill up a squeeze bottle or a small glass bottle with a cork in it and you are good to go. Keep it in the fridge for weeks. If a party is being planned, so should a larger amount be made.</p>

How to make Coffee Mixtures

<h3>Coffee Maceration / Cynar Coffee</h3>
If you want to add a coffee flavor to your favorite classic cocktail recipes, you can make a Coffee Maceration using your spirit of choice. Here we have made it with Cynar (artichoke bitter).

Make sure your coffee is a balanced coffee so it doesn't remove any of the spirit base flavors.

<h3>Coffee Maceration Rum</h3>
This maceration is easy to strain, has no bits inside and the finish will be a clear liquid. This way of making a maceration is better for keeping the finest flavors in the spirit.

You may have to make this a few times until you find your preferred taste and balance.
